La seva obra cabdal va ser 'Postguerra. Una historia europea desde 1945' (Editorial Taurus).
Aquest historiador fa servir tres línies argumentals; la reducció d'Europa, el decliu del fervor polític a Occident i l'aparició del model europeu fruit de la combinació entre polítiques socialdemòcrates i democristianes.

Historiadores que nos hayan contado cómo Europa, en la primera mitad del siglo XX, se sumió en el abismo de dos guerras que llenaron de muertos todo el continente hay muchos. Ha dejado varias obras, pero se le recordará por su monumental Postguerra. Una historia europea desde 1945 (Taurus) que llegó a las librerías españolas en el 2006. Es un libro de referencia fundamental para entender la Europa en la que vivimos, una Europa que ha pasado en pocas décadas de ser un campo de batalla a resurgir como una comunidad de valores y un sistema de relaciones interestatales. 'Desde luego -escribía-- no era algo predecible entre los escombros de 1945'.
A Judt se le ocurrió escribir su obra mayor en diciembre de 1989, poco después de la caída del muro de Berlín, en la estación central de Viena. Regresaba de Praga donde Vaclav Havel oficiaba el entierro del socialismo real en su país. Para Judt, Viena representaba en aquel momento 'un palimpsesto de los pasados complicados y superpuestos de Europa', una ciudad que era el enlace entre las dos europas nacidas de la segunda guerra mundial, una de las cuales se estaba desmoronando. Pero Judt tardaría unos años en poner manos a la obra a su historia de la posguerra.
El autor utilizaba varias líneas argumentales. Una de ellas es la reducción de Europa. El continente ya no podía aspirar a un estatus internacional o imperial. Había necesitado ayuda exterior para liberarse del fascismo y seguía necesitando ayuda para mantener a raya el comunismo. Una segunda línea es la que marca el declive del fervor político en Occidente por la pérdida de la fe política y el descrédito del marxismo oficial.
En tercer lugar, Judt desarrollaba la aparición del modelo europeo fruto de la ecléctica combinación de políticas socialdemócratas y democristianas, y su 'complicada y a menudo malentendida relación con Estados Unidos'. En último lugar, el historiador no olvidaba que la historia de la posguerra de Europa es una historia ensombrecida por los silencios.
